Gamebreakers - HS Boys This Week
We didn’t do a Gamebreakers column last week - our apologies, sometimes it’s difficult to fit everything in - so here’s a list of players who made an impact for their high school teams over the last two weeks.
Josh Pane
The captain and No. 8 for St. Thomas thundered through defenses to lead the Houston-based team over New Jersey’s Delbarton.
Benji Creel
The big Jesuit-New Orleans prop is part of an imposing Blue Jays forward pack that set the tone for a defeat of rivals St. Paul’s.
Thomas Gates and Austin MussGeorgetown Prep took a trip to Florida and came away looking very good. Gates (pictured) is the Prep No. 8 and Muss is the center, and both scored two tries in an impressive win over RBMA during their tour. |
Marcus Hogan
The St. Ignatius lock has been all about the possession of late, as he has led the team with his work in the lineout, stealing the lineout from other teams, and poaching the ball in the ruck.
Sam CusanoHe can play center or fullback, or pretty much anywhere else - Cusano (pictured, Dan Bandoni photo) has been a dangerous attacker for Granite Bay, and when he draws attention, others start scoring tries. Cusano was in the middle of Granite Bay’s big win over Solo. |
Jeremy Ockomichalak
The younger of the two Ockomichalak brothers, he scored two tries for Santa Monica in a shutout win over Belmont Shore, and continually tested Shore’s defense with his running.
Halleluiah Tiauli
The Rainier Highlanders captain has been among the team’s best performers every week as the Puyallup-area team has gone to 3-0 in Rugby Washington league play.
Jake Burns and Scott Wendling
The two Chuckanut backs were the heart of their team’s excellent backline play in a dramatic 31-27 victory over Seattle in Rugby Washington action.
Soh NakayamaIn the past week, Greenwich has won the Four Leafs tournament, won the Bermuda 7s, and defeated defending New Jersey club champion Union. Nakayama (pictured), the Greenwich scrumhalf has been brilliant throughout, and that’s before you get to his goalkicking. Against Delbarton, Nakayama scored three tries, missed his first two conversion attempts, and then hit 13 in a row to score 41 points all by himself. |
Quinterlo Baker
Cy-Fair defeated Kingwood and all the talk was about this fast, elusive outside center who scored three tries.
Leki Fotu
The captain of Herriman was once again a powerful presence for his school team, emerging as a somewhat terrifying ballcarrier as he set the Utah Lions on their heels.
Mohammed Abdullah
The Lassiter Trojans prop scored a try and set one up as the Trojans beat the Titans in Georgia HS action.
Steven Rohde
The St. Thomas Aquinas flanker was everywhere stealing ball, making tackles, and exerting pressure as STA defeated rivals Kansas City Jr Blues 15-0. Rohde also scored a try.
Avery Longrie
The Union HS (Oregon) inside center led the way for his team in a 55-5 win over Prairie, scoring four tries and taking the kicking duties over, as well. His ball skills and running lines were impressive.
