Doylestown Shocker in Stone Harbor
The Doylestown Girls 7s team shocked all in the final of the Girls HS bracket at the Surfside 7s Sunday, defeating longtime 7s rivals the New Jersey Blaze 24-5 in the championship game.
Doylestown had already lost to the Blaze on Saturday, and seemed to be staring down the business end of a fourth second place to the New Jersey team. But somewhere along the way, said Coach Stacy Mancuso, something changed.
"We made some personnel shifts," said Mancuso, "and we changed our approach. And it worked."
Mancuso shifted Sophie Pyrz to the wing, where she could use her pace to attack, and also swing back into the sweeper role on defense. It was as sweeper that she made several key tackles in the final.
Mancuso also moved Daz Williams to center, giving her a chance to punch through the Blaze line. And while Doylestown resolved to spin the ball wide as quickly as possible, they ramped up their line speed on defense to stop the Blaze from doing the same.
"If we kept good ball movement, and forced them to rush things, we'd be OK," said Mancuso.
They also resolved to compete at the kickoffs, and on the opening kickoff, they won the ball and Alex Pogorzelski scored. That built belief within the players immediately, and they kept to the game plan throughout.
"We wanted to keep it close at halftime and then we felt our impact subs could help us run away with it," said Mancuso.
Pyrz added a try for a 10-5 halftime lead, and then Pogorzelski scored two more times to put the game away.
"We had fun, enjoyed playing with each other, and believed in what we are doing," said Mancuso. "And it worked out."
