Bosco Wins SoCal Varsity White Title in Wild Final
St. John Bosco just managed to survive the Southern California Boys Varsity White final, as View Park’s storming comeback fell just a conversion short - St. John won 45-43 in a barnburner of a game.
St. John Bosco surged ahead early, using their big forwards to pound the lighter but faster View Park team.
“We were giving up about 15 to 20 pounds a man,” said View Park Coach David Hughes.
But this was expected, and Hughes felt his team could start wearing Bosco down later, using speed to run the big forwards ragged. It almost worked.
Bosco led in a close one at halftime and then surged on to lead 45-24 with 15 minutes to go. That’s when View Park, led by props Justin Murray and Matthew Rhodes, and with Jabari Fernandes playing well in the backs, started scoring tries. They scored three tries late and looked spry enough to get another one, but ran out of time.
Bosco showed they have improved mightily from their earlier games, and took the title. In fact, both teams showed improvement over the Varsity White season.
