Arizona State Kicks Off 15s Season with Win
The Arizona State rugby program opened its preseason with a win 53-22 win over Grand Canyon University in Tempe, Ariz. this past weekend.
After a successful end to the sevens season in November (2nd in the PAC Conference 7s), the Sun Devils have been working to transition to the 15s game. “The guys were pretty beaten up after the sevens season and needed to transition and assimilate into the 15’s squad," said Head Coach Gary Lane. “We have also been working hard at player identification this season and squad depth because we will be playing some of North America's best teams this Spring and we know we must accommodate for the unexpected, and injuries”.
The Sun Devils found the going tough against a much improved Grand Canyon team. Half way through the 1st half the Sun Devils were down 17-0. However, with adjustments late, the Sun Devils tied the score to 17-17 at the half.
“We were trying some new players at different positions and seeing how they fared,” said Lane. “At halftime we made further adjustments and this allowed us to open up the game.”
The Sun Devils came out and scored five unanswered tries, with Matt Brennan and Alex Sandstrom scoring two each, and Alex Walsh getting one. The tries were nice, but Lane said he was mostly impressed with the work of the pack, led by Andrew Burke and Dallas Sauer They wore down the Grand Canyon pack, staying patient, running good support lines and controlling the gain line.
“Grand Canyon have taken a huge leap from last year, they have size and speed. I think they will be continuing to improve and will surprise a lot of teams this year," said Lane.
As for the Sun Devils, they will take this win into the holiday break and prepare for a meeting in the New Year with St. Mary’s in Moraga, Calif..
“I am very proud of the professionalism of this team, we have a great leadership group and I think we are starting to see the results. The seven’s season was a good indication that we are heading in the right direction,” said Lane.
