Amazons Take Girls HS Club Title
The Girls High School Club Championship was won Sunday by the Sacramento Amazons (Sac PAL) Sunday at the campus of Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Wash.
The tournament was sponsored and supported by ATAVUS, with ten teams involved. With the field being ten, not eight, a play-in for the quarterfinals was set up between the bottom four seeds: South Bay, the #2 team out of Southern California, Morris, the top team out of New Jersey, Idaho champs Capital, and the Land Park Harlequins, the top team out of Northern California's Sac Conference.
In that play-in, South Bay edged Morris 10-7, while Capital beat Land Park 5-0.
So that set up some intriguing quarterfinals matchups, with multiple national champs Fallbrook against Capital, United out of Utah against Danville out of Northern California, Sacramento against South Bay, and Pleasanton out of Northern California against Washington champs Kent.
Pleasanton may have struggled to get to .500 in NorCal, but they opened well against the Kent Crusaders, 13-10. In another close one, United edged Danville 15-12. Both of those results might be called upsets. Fallbrook won comfortably over Capital 41-0, while Sacramento handled South Bay 24-7.
So on to the semis, where Fallbrook beat United 17-5, and Sacramento beat Pleasanton - in the teams' third meeting of the year - 34-12, setting up what has become the traditional all-California final. Sacramento controlled the game for the most part, ran out to a 24-5 lead, and held on 24-15 to win it all.
United did very wel to take third, beating Pleasanton 29-10.
