JESSICA JAVELET
It says a lot when our Breakout Performance goes to an athlete who only played in two tournaments during the 2013-14 season. Jessica Javelet debuted in front of an American audience in February 2014 at the Atlanta 7s, a leg on the Women Sevens World Series, and she was one of the most exciting additions to the squad in a while.
Speed. That was the first thing that jumped off the pitch. The Eagles have good team speed, but with the exception of Vix Folayan, no one else had true finishing speed. Javelet put hers to good use and leaned on this skill as she sorted out this new game. One of the most memorable trends throughout the entire tournament saw Javelet streak across the field, tracking down a breakaway, and thwarting a would-be try-scorer in the nick of time.
The then-28-year-old joined the USA in Sao Paulo for her final appearance in the series, and she racked up 12 tries in the process.
Javelet had to fulfill some other duties before rejoining the 7s Eagles and reappeared last month in Dubai. She still needs some refinement – her passing needs work – but she reiterated her importance with four tries, finishing second on the 2014 scoring list with 80 points on 16 tries (Folayan led with 90 points on 18 tries). The San Diego native turns 30 this year, so who knows how much longer Javelet will be with the squad – but she’s got a great attitude and talent to spare, and we’re happy she’s running with the Eagles now.
